About the book – new revised and corrected edition (2022)
Nicolas Flamel, Paracelsus, and Albertus Magnus are the best-known alchemists. Nicolas Flamel's fame is so great in France that there is perhaps no one who does not know his story.
His house, which still existed in the 19th century, more than once captivated archaeologists. Romantics, lovers of the Middle Ages, more than once used Flamel's name. But all this is nothing compared to the renown of the illustrious Adept in past centuries, especially in the 17th and 18th centuries. His house and various foundations were then destinations for alchemical pilgrimages.
No disciple of Hermes, French or foreign, would have passed through Paris without visiting the house on Rue des Écrivains and the two arcades, covered with symbols, of the Cimetière des Innocents.
After his death, Flamel was considered one of the greatest masters of alchemy. His works were highly sought after, especially those that existed only in manuscript form. Copies were multiplied in the 17th and 18th centuries, a brilliant proof of the vogue Flamel enjoyed among Hermetists.
Moreover, isn't this Adept the epitome of the true alchemist, working ceaselessly, never weary, never discouraged, dividing his time between Prayer, Study, and the Laboratory, desiring Science only for its own sake, then having achieved his goal, using the acquired wealth for good deeds, and continuing to live modestly for himself? What other alchemist could offer us such a well-filled life! Others, Sethon, Kelley, Bacon, offer us a more eventful, more dramatic existence, but certainly less rich in psychological documents.
In this new, revised and corrected translation into contemporary French, all the documents that have come down to us about the story of Flamel and Pernelle, his wife, are gathered. This work also reveals the traditional explanation of the Sculptures of the Arch of the Innocents and the Figures of Abraham the Jew.
Editor's note for the print version: To enhance the reading experience, this book is presented in a "Beau Livre" (fine book) format.
