The Czech Art Nouveau artist, Alfons Mucha (1860-1939), marked the visual landscape of the late 19th century with his compositions of flowing lines and floral details. His enchanting canvases of beautiful women in sensual peach, olive, ochre, and gold hues became the emblem of the Belle Époque.

Mucha's work influenced the illustration, poster, postcard, and advertising of his time. His portrait-format posters of the iconic actress Sarah Bernhardt, in particular, achieved great renown. Beyond these decorative works, Mucha pursued strong political objectives.

With his monumental series of paintings, The Slav Epic, he expressed his unwavering support for Pan-Slavism and advocated for the political independence of the Czechs and all other Slavic peoples from Austria-Hungary.

Mucha's work influenced the illustration, poster, postcard, and advertising of his time.

This book, produced in collaboration with the Mucha Foundation, presents the artist's major works and illustrates the entirety of his oeuvre: from decorative ornaments to book illustrations, posters, and photographs, right through to monumental paintings.
