Meister Eckhart

Meister Eckhart (circa 1260-circa 1328), “from whom God never hid anything”: such was his reputation even in his own time. And yet, this renowned Dominican theologian and preacher was condemned for heresy, about a year after his death.

Doubtless because he preached theological subtleties in the vernacular (German) to the common people. Also because it was believed that he taught the uncreated nature of the world and the identity of the just man and God.

But Eckhart had no desire to be a heretic; his theses were misunderstood. His fundamental quest was for the One beyond multiplicity: a unity that would somehow be the common origin of God and man, and the goal of the mystical union he preached. It is this search for union with the ineffable God that explains why his voice still resonates today.
