The life and work of Eckhart in the intellectual and social context of Rheno-Flemish mysticism.
Rhenish mysticism is a theological current that developed in Germany at the end of the Middle Ages. It seeks to express the soul's experience in its striving towards the absolute, through a discourse aware of its limitations.
To detach oneself from intellectual images and representations to conform to the Word of God, image of the Father. Meister Eckhart (1260-1328) and the German Dominican school emphasized the role of the intellect in this striving of the soul towards God.
Based on a reading of the main texts, this work not only presents the ideas of Rhenish mysticism, but also the sources and posterity of this theology, while admirably placing it back in its historical context.
A Germanist, agrégée in German, and Doctor of Letters, Jeanne Ancelet-Hustache (1891-1983) specialized in Rhenish mysticism and was a translator of Henry Suso and Meister Eckhart.
