Assessing books damaged by a flood in a peaceful village was already unusual enough. Discovering a corpse in the bookstore? That, I hadn't anticipated.
Émilie Laroche arrives in Saint-Léger-les-Roses for three days of quiet assessment: inventorying books damaged by water. Suspicious manuscripts, rare editions of questionable origin... Between two appraisals, the young Parisian senses something fishy.
But just as she's beginning her work, Marcel Rousseau, a literary critic, is found dead in the bookstore. The assessment turns into a criminal investigation, and the gendarmerie welcomes all possible help.
Aided by Thomas, the Lyonnaise gendarme more attractive than she admits, Henri the distraught bookseller, and Marguerite the schoolteacher who knows all the gossip, Émilie strives to unravel the threads of this case.
Who was orchestrating this manuscript trafficking, what secret was being protected? Is Rousseau's death related to his obsession with rare editions? And also... Will Émilie's heart manage to leave this charming little village after her mission?
