Song of the Sea

When she was very young, Violaine, an only child, lost her father to tuberculosis, and then, less than a year later, her mother, who succumbed to the same disease. In this small coastal village where money was scarce and every mouth to feed was an almost insurmountable challenge, no one could take in the cruelly tested little girl. People looked for solutions left and right, a way to help her, but the awaited miracle did not happen.

So she was sent to the Pyrenees to live with her aunt Marcelline and uncle Albert, who welcomed her coldly, not to say brutally, and very quickly made her life unbearable. Fortunately, Sidonie Fernandez, a Spanish woman with fascinating gifts and nicknamed the "brouche" (witch), took the young girl under her wing and did not abandon her despite the persistent blows of this terrible fate that kept striking mercilessly.
