The story in a nutshell

The book tells the life of a Bourbonnais peasant, Tobie, an ordinary man, unremarkable, but deeply attached to his land. Through his existence, Guillaumin describes with rare precision the daily life of small farmers at the end of the 19th century:

- the exhausting work in the fields,

- chronic poverty,

- sometimes burdensome family ties,

- simple joys,

- and the silent dignity of those who live "close to the earth".

It is not a romantic plot in the classical sense, but rather the portrait of an entire life, from childhood to old age, with its hopes, renunciations, and struggles.

Why this novel is important

- It is one of the first French novels to give a voice to a peasant from within, without folklore or condescension.

- Guillaumin himself was a farmer, which gives the narrative a rare authenticity.

- The work has become a reference in peasant literature, often compared to Zola's La Terre, but with a gentler, more human sensibility.

Atmosphere and style

The tone is simple, direct, deeply true. One feels the harshness of rural life, but also a form of discreet poetry, that of the seasons, repeated gestures, and the intimate relationship with nature.
