Thousands have made their choice! Alka Joshi wins the 2022 Grand Prix for Historical Fiction with The Henna Artist!
“My designs were more elaborate, telling the stories of those I served. The darker the henna, the more a woman was loved by her husband—at least that’s what they believed. Over time, my regulars came to believe that my tattoos held certain powers.”
Fleeing an abusive marriage, seventeen-year-old Lakshmi leaves her rural 1950s village for the bustling pink city of Jaipur. There, she becomes the most sought-after henna artist—and confidante—to the women of high society. Continuously celebrated for her original designs and wise counsel, Lakshmi must ensure she does not fuel jealous rumors that could damage her reputation. As she pursues her dream of independence, she is one day stunned to see her husband again, who has managed to find her. He is accompanied by a spirited young girl, a sister Lakshmi never knew existed. Suddenly, her peaceful life is turned upside down. In a society constantly oscillating between tradition and modernity, Lakshmi must find her place while pursuing her quest for freedom.
“The romance of old Rajasthan takes shape under Alka Joshi's beautiful pen. The Henna Artist opens a door to a world as rich and fascinating as it is harsh and cruel. I eagerly await her next masterpiece.” Sujata Massey
“Eloquent and touching...Alka Joshi masters the art of the perfect balance between self-discovery and the need for familial love.” Publishers Weekly
