After a hard-won battle to steal the Conch of Ramor from Shan-Tung, Bragon, Pélisse, and the Mysterious Stranger (a providential rescuer who refuses to remove his mask or reveal his identity) travel to the Marches of the Foaming Sails, domain of the Sorceress-Princess Mara. She awaits them to reclaim the conch and tell them the purpose of their next mission: to read the runes buried deep within the Temple of Oblivion, for they alone reveal the name of the land where the Time Bird resides. The Temple of Oblivion, the most dangerous place in all of Akbar. No one dares venture there, not even the Jaisirs who guard it. Only a madman would be audacious enough to enter with the hope of emerging alive.
Adding to Bragon's reluctance is the fact that he will have to endure the presence of Bodias, sorcerer-prince of the Marches of the Thousand Greens, Mara's former lover, and therefore also Pélisse's potential father, during the journey. The rivalry between the two men will be just one of the innumerable obstacles that will litter the path of the companions of the Quest. Bulrog, an ex-mercenary in Shan-Tung's service, Bragon's former student, thirsts for revenge. He and the sorcerer-prince Fjel have allied to thwart Mara's plans. And in the mysterious depths of the Temple of Oblivion, the hungry Guardians eagerly await their new victims...
