In Vienna in 1938, Sophie lives in fear of Nazi persecution.
When her Jewish father is killed before her eyes by a frenzied mob and her mother is imprisoned, she realizes that to survive, she must flee immediately.
Sophie accepts a librarian position in England, at Windsor Castle, where young princesses Elizabeth and Margaret live. In exchange, in the greatest secrecy, she will have to intercept compromising letters written by the king's brother, who is suspected of having incriminating sympathies with the Nazi regime.
Behind the high walls, Sophie gradually discovers that a sinister plot is at work and that, to protect and save Princess Elizabeth, the future Queen of England, she will have to be ready to make any sacrifice...
✨ Review from the Librairie du Grimoire Ancien
With "The Windsor Librarian," Daisy Wood delivers a historical novel that skillfully weaves together the threads of History with a capital H and intimate history. The author explores a little-known aspect of World War II – Nazi sympathies within the British aristocracy and tensions within the royal family – to construct a captivating spy thriller rooted in a disturbing historical reality. Sophie's character embodies the figure of the Viennese Jewish refugee who, having lost everything, must navigate the dangerous waters of the royal court while bearing the weight of trauma and grief. Wood excels in creating an atmosphere of constant tension: behind the gilded splendor and protocol of Windsor lies a world of plots, betrayals, and mortal dangers. The royal library becomes a powerful symbolic space, a place of knowledge and secrets, where books stand alongside compromising letters and where the search for truth mixes with the duty of discretion. The author weaves a touching relationship between Sophie and young Princess Elizabeth, offering a humanized portrait of the future queen through the eyes of a woman who has lost everything. The novel subtly explores themes of sacrifice, loyalty, identity, and resilience in the face of horror. Wood achieves a delicate balance between historical rigor and novelistic tension, creating a narrative that illuminates a dark period while paying homage to the anonymous heroes who risked their lives to protect the future. A novel that will particularly resonate with fans of historical fiction, espionage, and stories featuring courageous women in extreme contexts. A captivating read that reminds us that libraries have always been places of resistance and preservation of truth.
