During his artistic career, Wassily Kandinsky (1866–1944) not only transformed his own style, he also changed the course of art history.

Having started with figurative paintings and landscapes, he then embarked on a spiritual, sensitive, and rhythmic use of line and color and is now considered the author of the first abstract painting.

In addition to being an artist, Kandinsky was also a teacher and theorist, and his interest in music, poetry, philosophy, ethnology, the occult, theater, and myth fed into his paintings and engravings.

He was part of the two influential groups of the Blaue Reiter (the Blue Rider) and the Bauhaus and left behind fascinating visual works, but also great treatises such as Concerning the Spiritual in Art.

Among the key principles he expounds are the correspondences between painting, music, and mystical experience, and the purification of art that moves away from material realism towards emotional expression, notably condensed by color.

This book highlights major works by Kandinsky to present his palette of vibrant colors, shapes, and emotions.

By tracing the radical evolution of the artist's style, it shows how one painter's journey opened the way for abstract expression to generations of artists.
