Eighteenth-century freemasonry wavered between the continuation of the Templar myth, the philosophy of the Enlightenment, and the discovery of the troubling mysteries of theurgy.
It was in Lyon, in the peaceful milieu of the silk manufacturers, that one of them, Jean-Baptiste Willermoz (1730-1824), would achieve the synthesis that would give birth to the Rectified Scottish Rite (RSR), a Masonic system unlike any other.
Spiritualist and Christian in a freemasonry that was going to embark on the path of politics and secularism, the RSR almost completely disappeared in the 19th century. It was at the beginning of the 20th century, in the midst of a crisis between the Church and the State, a confrontation where Freemasonry played a leading role among the opponents of Catholicism, that it reappeared, almost against the tide of everything.
Having always brought together singular and committed minds, its history reflects that of France over the last two centuries: passionate and sometimes contradictory.
This book offers an overview, enhanced by remarkable iconography.
