Second half of the 19th century. In the lush countryside near Aix-en-Provence, Paul Cézanne (1839–1906) frantically put brush to canvas, depicting landscapes and still lifes that would soon become pillars of modern art.

Through his thick brushstrokes of intense colors and his new and bold approach to light and space, he embodied the link between Impressionism and the main movements of the early 20th century, thus becoming, in the words of Matisse and Picasso, their "father to all [of them]".

This new introduction dedicated to the artist has selected, from all of Cézanne's production, the essential works for understanding his evolution, his innovations, and his decisive influence on modern art.

From his still lifes with pears and other fruits to his outdoor bathing scenes, the book traces his experiments with color, perspective, and materials aiming to paint "a harmony parallel to Nature", as well as his particular way of looking at the world and rendering it in painting.

Throughout the pages, we discover Cézanne's famous
Card Players, his superposition of warm and cool tones that in themselves create shapes and surfaces, as well as the geometric rigor of his landscapes inspired by the surroundings of Aix-en-Provence, as luminous under the sun of Southern France as they are audacious in their radically new treatment of proportions and depth.
