The ancient Egyptian art we have inherited is never signed; yet we value the creations of these anonymous masters as much as works made centuries later, like the statues of Michelangelo or the paintings of Leonardo da Vinci. This book presents some of the most important masterpieces created between the Old Kingdom, in the third millennium BCE, and the Late Period, in the 9th century BCE.
The works include sculptures, bas-reliefs, sarcophagi, frescoes, masks, and decorative elements, some of which feature prominently in the world heritage of humanity. While most are now preserved in the Egyptian Museum in Cairo, others are exhibited in prestigious museums such as the Louvre in Paris, the British Museum in London, the Egyptian Museum in Berlin, and the Metropolitan Museum in New York.
Among the featured works: the seated statue of King Djoser, the wooden panel from the mastaba of Hesy-Re, a scribe statue made with various materials, the funerary bas-relief of Ashayet, the statue of Senusret III as a sphinx, the stolen statue of Cherihotep, the bas-reliefs of the Karnak Temple, the sarcophagus of Queen Hatshepsut, the frescoes of Thebes, the seated statue of the goddess Sekhmet, the statue of Queen Tiye, the head of Akhenaten (Amenhotep IV), Queen Nefertiti, the gold mask of Tutankhamun, the Ramesses II of Abu Simbel, Horus the falcon god in granite, the stone bas-relief from the Temple of Horus at Edfu
