2084: The End of the World

Abistan, a vast empire, takes its name from the prophet Abi, Yölah's "delegate" on Earth. Its system is founded on amnesia and submission to the one true God. All personal thought is banned; an omnipresent surveillance system allows the authorities to know of any deviant ideas or actions. The unified people live happily in unquestioning faith.

But one man, Ati, questions the imposed certainties. He embarks on an investigation into a people of renegades who live in ghettos, without the solace of religion. Through a narrative full of comical and unsettling inventions, Boualem Sansal follows in Orwell's footsteps to satirize the excesses and hypocrisy of religious radicalism.
