This was a five-star read for me (in 2024)! It’s my first time reading an Asian contemporary book, and I absolutely loved it. The genre is fiction with a touch of magical realism, and it was such a calming and heartwarming read. The pacing was just right, the writing style felt serene, and I found it so easy to connect with the stories. It’s one of those books that you can pick up at any time of day and immediately get immersed in.The book centers around different adult characters who are all going through significant transitions in their lives—whether mentally, emotionally, or in their careers. For example, there’s a young woman who feels lost even after achieving her dream of moving from a rural town to Tokyo, wondering if she’s truly accomplished anything. Then there’s a 35-year-old accountant who dreams of “one day” pursuing his passion but feels like time is slipping away and his dream is fading.Another story features a successful magazine editor in her 40s whose life shifts dramatically after becoming a mother. She feels torn between missing her pre-child life and feeling guilty for having those thoughts while with her daughter, whom she deeply loves. There’s also a 30-year-old unemployed man struggling with self-worth and uncertainty about his future, and a 65-year-old retiree who has lost his sense of purpose and wonders what to do with his newfound free time. What struck me most is how relatable these stories are—there’s something in them that can resonate deeply with anyone. It’s a book you can return to at different stages of life and find new meaning each time. I also think it would make a thoughtful gift for any adult navigating the ups and downs of life.Highly recommend it!
